Going Down Memory Lane

Oh since around 2020, we haven't watched much TV at all.  I can't tell you the last time I sat down and watched the news, or a sit-com, or any other television program.  I just don't like the content.  They lost me.  It seems like every show is editorializing, every commercial is trying to push some type of agenda.  Even sports programs have become unwatchable with all the virtue signaling.  I don't know.  Maybe it's just me?  Anyway, I've found more productive things to do with my time, and haven't even missed it.

Perhaps, and this may be wishful thinking, many people are longing for 'normal' TV where the idea is to entertain without trying to push the limits of societal norms and indoctrinate viewers.  Why do I say that?  Well, I tip my hat to Chevrolet.  I was made aware of Chevrolet's "Going Down Memory Lane" Christmas Commercial 2025, and I want to share it with you:

Wow!  That really got me.  A family takes a holiday road trip in their old Suburban and remember their past experiences.  Things aren't always a perfect or care-free or happy as we remember, but times are good and filled with laughter amidst tears and joy intermixed with sorrow.  Even when things seem bad, at least we've got each other - togetherness, a family that leans on one another and carries each other through difficult times, and ages gracefully together.  When we do that, we arrive at our destination.

Watching this commercial made my eyes get a little... damp.  It especially hit home where it flashed to the back seat of the Suburban as the children grew and then there's only an empty seat.  And the dogs.  Dogs named Willie and Waylon, no less!  Whew!  Anyway, I don't know if this advertisement will sell any vehicles, but it sold me.  It reminded me that wholesome, family-oriented commercials can still be made.  Ones that you don't mute or go to the bathroom when they come on.  Well done, Chevrolet!  Keep 'em comin'!!!

Sunday School Christmas Party

This past Friday evening a couple in our church who have the gift of hospitality opened up their home to our Sunday School class from Cornerstone Baptist Church in Jennings.  It was our annual Christmas Party.  We met at 5:30 and visited for a good while.  We then circled up in the kitchen, held hands and prayed.  There were 19 of us in attendance. 

We lined up and fixed our plates.  There were lots of delicious dishes on the buffet line.  I tried to try a little bit of everything.  Some of the more interesting was boudin stuffed in a pastry with a pepper jelly glaze, homemade sausage, and... Alligator!  It was lean and in a spicy gravy.  There were more desserts than you could shake a stick at.  We had coffee with dessert and then moved to the living room where we took pictures around their tree.

Then we sang Christmas carols.  Next year we'll bring our song books since we only know the first verse of each carol, pretty much.  We sang some hymns in Cajun French along with interpretations for the non-French speakers.  We laughed and joked around and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

It is good to have a close church family to belong to!  What a blessing from God.

What a great day!  Merry Christmas everyone.  Christmas fell on a Sunday this year, so we had abbreviated services at our little church.  No Sunday School - just Morning Worship at 10 AM.  I hope you were able to make it to Services to honor our Savior.  We opened the service reading about the birth of Jesus Christ from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2 along with prayer and special music: "Sweet Little Jesus Boy."

We sang a few carols - Silent Night, Joy to the World and Beautiful Star of Bethlehem.  It was a beautiful time of corporate worship.  Jesus is truly that Light that shines brighter and brighter even in this darkened world.  Over 25 years ago, this tree of light was made and we light it up with candles.  Each family comes up and takes turns lighting up the tree. 

It takes quite a while to light it all up, but once its done, it is a sight to behold!

It was truly a good time of worship together.  We had a number of members that were out today, but we had a number of guests to join us in praising God.

Once the tree was all lit up, we sang, "There's Something About That Name."

Now all this took place so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23 “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”  Matthew 1:22-23

Merry Christmas to All, And to All a Good Night

Well another Christmas has come and in less than three hours, will be gone.  The year 2020 will be upon us.  Time marches on indeed. 

On Christmas Eve we gathered at my Mom & Dad's house to eat, to visit with family members, and to eventually open gifts.  It is very easy to get distracted this time of year with the presents, the fellowship, and the food.  There's nothing inherently wrong with food, presents, and visiting.  One must constantly strain, however, to focus on things that are eternal and not temporal.  The world and the system of this world dangles carrots on the end of sticks and we follow.  But we're not supposed to be following carrots...

All the kids and grandkids gather around in the den on Christmas Eve and my Dad reads from the Gospel of Luke.

The "Christmas Story" is a nice story.  It is a simple story - a joyous story.  One can almost imagine the scents of animals and hay and sounds of farm animals and a baby crying and sights in that stable 2000 years ago.  A proud mother and father.  Bewildered animals.  Worshipful shepherds.

The birth of the Christ Child was foretold 700 years prior.  His birth was a big deal.  The bigger deal was that thirty three years later, He was pierced for our transgressions.  He suffered and died a cruel death on a sinner's cross, despite never sinning.  Three days later, He rose from the death, victorious over the grave.  If we believe in Him (Messiah), we can spend eternity with Him in Paradise!

A good friend of mine sent me the link below just last night at just the right time.  I needed to hear it.  I've listened to it too many times to count.  The Isaacs have voices that sound like angels and this song helps me to focus on the birth of the Christ Child.
